Plants provide us with food, pharmaceuticals, shelter, shade, fuel, wildlife habitat, building materials, erosion control, and enjoyment. Belknap CCD’s 15th annual fundraising sale is offering a wide variety of plants and accessories. New items include ladybugs & praying mantis, to help you reduce problem insects. Lots of groundcovers are included to help make yard work easier and help reduce fertilizer runoff. Many of the plants flower, and lots of them contribute to “edible landscaping” for people & wildlife. And, there are lots of other types of plants inside the flyer.  Phytochemicals is the general term for “Nutriceuticals” and antioxidants from fruits & vegetables that provide health benefits.  Antioxidants, such as Vitamins C, A, E, & lycopene and ellagic acid, occur in blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, currants, lingonberries, cranberries, elderberries, tomatoes, grapes and strawberries. Research shows their consumption may slow body & brain aging too. Blueberries and apples are a good source of pectin and fiber both help lower blood cholesterol.

bareroot stock - plant will come wrapped in damp packing material, not in soil.
seedling - Evergreens grown in its original seedbed.  Bareroot deciduous plants- some from cuttings.
grafted fruit trees- many of the fruit trees offered are grafted at the nursery to help improve the quality of the trees available to growers.  The grafting process takes the rootstock of one variety of tree and splices it with branches from another variety to help control how big the tree will get, how early the fruit matures, and to improve overall performance.

transplants - a transplant has been removed from its seedbed and replanted for more growth.  Most of the evergreens BCCD offers are transplants that have large root systems, branching foliage, and a solid main stem.  Although these transplants have yet to develop a conical, Christmas tree shape, they are superior in appearance to evergreen seedlings.  The numbers listed next to the evergreens on the order form indicate that a (2-3) transplant is a 5-year-old plant that was grown 2 years in a seedbed and 3 years in a transplant bed.

cross pollination - appears as the symbol x in your materials.  Many fruit and nut bearing plants need cross-pollination with another variety of the same plant to produce.  For apples, pears, and blueberries it is important to chose at least two different varieties when ordering if you do not already have different varieties growing on or near your property.  Walnut and hazelnut trees need 2 trees of the same variety to produce well.

It is wise to consider ordering plastic marker flags to help prevent mower mishaps.

When choosing your plants it is important to note what the appropriate soil conditions and light requirements are for your selections.  Both your order form and the description pages offer you guidance to assist you in making your selections.

BCCD will not be responsible for plant stock once it is removed from the pick-up site.
Plant as soon as possible after pick-up.
